St. Joseph's/Candler currently offers a PGY1 clinical pharmacy residency program accredited by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) with four resident positions available each year. We also participate in the ASHP Resident Match Program.
Our Mission
To provide quality, compassionate,
cost-effective pharmaceutical care to patients treated at St. Joseph's/Candler
and to provide leadership on medication use and drug policy for patients and
members of the health professions.
Clinical Pharmacy Department
St. Joseph's/Candler is a
636-bed, regional referral, comprehensive health delivery system. The St.
Joseph's/Candler pharmacy department, functioning across both campuses, is
highly automated and is comprised of approximately 100 staff members. Clinical
practitioners provide extensive services in several areas, including, but not
limited to: internal medicine, critical care, infectious diseases, oncology,
cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology and nutrition, anticoagulation and
administration. An active clinical research program provides the resident with
an opportunity to participate in both ongoing and new protocols.
PGY1 Residency Program
St. Joseph's/Candler Clinical
Pharmacy Residency program focuses on development of the knowledge, attitude and
skills needed to provide comprehensive, quality and cost-effective
pharmaceutical care with compassion. Our program is a flexible, broad-based
practice-oriented experience.
The resident's training plan is individualized to meet the resident's needs
and goals as well as the goals of the program. As a community-based health
delivery network, we offer many unique educational and experiential
opportunities and advantages for students of the health professions.
In addition to required and elective rotations, the pharmacy
resident participates in:
- preceptorship of PharmD students
- medication use evaluation
- safety process education and implementation
- performance improvement
- P&T Committee functions
- presentation of continuing education seminars to staff and the community
- development of an original research project for presentation and submission for publication
- involvement with other opportunities and projects as they arise.
It is expected that the resident will acquire a well-rounded, diversified, clinical training experience applicable to the various areas of pharmacy practice.
Key features of our program include outstanding residency preceptors who are
committed to the professional development of the residents and maintain faculty
appointments with the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, Mercer University College of
Pharmacy and South
University School of Pharmacy. St. Joseph's/Candler hosts numerous doctor of
pharmacy students from the Southeast area. St Joseph's/Candler is a nationally
and internationally recognized leader in medication delivery technology and
maintains academic affiliations with the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), Mayo
Clinic, Emory
University, Armstrong
Atlantic State University and South University. St. Joseph's/Candler is a medical teaching
facility for the Medical
College of Georgia (MCG) and also provides comprehensive educational
experiences for students of all health
professions.
Residency Rotations
The 12-month
residency is divided into required and elective rotations, which are scheduled

the sequence of rotations maximizes the development of the individual resident.
St. Joseph's/Candler, along with our affiliations with Emory University, Mayo Clinic and

Residency Benefits
Residents are paid a stipend for the
52-week residency year. Participation in health, dental and vision insurance
benefits is an option available to the resident. Residents must complete
physical and health screening examinations prior to starting the residency year.
Residents accrue paid time off (PTO) to be used for holidays, sick days and
interviews. In addition, time is allotted for residents to attend the ASHP Midyear
Clinical Meeting, the Southeastern Residency Conference (SERC), GSHP
Residency Research Forum and one GSHP statewide meeting. A budget of $1,500 is
provided for each resident to be used for attendance at and participation in
these seminars. Membership in the Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists (GSHP) is
paid by the health system; membership in ASHP is
maintained by the resident.
Pharmacist Licensure
You may begin the process to become
licensed in the state of Georgia by requesting the appropriate information from
the State
Board of Pharmacy. It takes time to receive the information and application.
Deadlines vary depending on whether an applicant is reciprocating a current
license or obtaining a new license through score transfer of NAPLEX results.
Both reciprocating and new licensees are required to take the Georgia version of
the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE). New licensees also will take
the Georgia Pharmacy Practical Exam given in June each year.
Interviews
Interviews are an integral part of our
evaluation of potential residents. We expect that serious applicants will want
to evaluate our clinical site as well. Therefore, we require applicants to
schedule an on-site interview in Savannah once application materials are
completed and submitted.
