Cancer Survivorship
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP), a strategic partnership of the NCI and participating hospitals, is designed to create a community-based cancer center network to support cancer research, and enhance access to and increase quality of care at community hospitals.
As a participating NCCCP site, the Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion (LCRP) at St. Joseph's/Candler strives to improve the patient experience by expanding survivorship and palliative care services.
A New Survivorship Educational Program!
The Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion offers a free, six week workshop designed specifically to help cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment care. Please help us plan the next program by registering early and letting us know what best fits YOUR schedule. We would like to know your preference for the best day of the week and the best time of the day.
For more details about the next class call (912) 819-5704 or email us here.
This workshop will provide expert medical speakers that may include physicians, nurses, social workers, genetic counselors, pharmacists, nutritionists and fitness experts. They will discuss exercise tailored to each participant's ability, training in relaxation and stress management as well as tips for nutritious eating. It will answer many of your questions about cancer survivorship post-cancer treatment. The course covers: Wellness, Exercise, Emotions, Nutrition, Medical Care and Survivorship.
What is cancer survivorship? According to the National Cancer Institute, "Cancer survivorship covers the physical, psychosocial, and economic issues of cancer, from diagnosis until the end of life. It focuses on the health and life of a person with cancer beyond the diagnosis and treatment phases. Survivorship includes issues related to the ability to get health care and follow-up treatment, late effects of treatment, second cancers, and quality of life. Family members, friends and caregivers are also part of the survivorship experience."
For many, the end of cancer treatment is a time for celebration, but for some there are mixed feelings. Survivors often experience dramatic changes in their lives and may need assistance in moving forward. St. Joseph's/Candler offers a variety of programs and supportive oncology services to help cancer patients along their journey from diagnosis through survivorship.
