Outreach Coordinator

As the oncology outreach coordinator at the Nancy N. and J. C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion, Wanda Jones, BSHM, RN, OCN, develops and conducts educational programs to increase awareness in the community on the prevention and early detection of cancer with an emphasis on decreasing healthcare disparities and increasing clinical trial enrollment.

With 31 years of nursing experience, including 19 years in oncology nursing, Jones:

  • Implements screening programs in partnership with local and statewide organizations and identifies at-risk populations to improve access to cancer care
  • Collects and reports statistical data to substantiate the need for educational and community outreach
  • Provides support to the patient and family/caregiver during diagnosis, treatment and survival, as well as through end-of-life issues
  • Collaborates with patient navigators, pastoral care workers, dietitians and social service workers to provide patients with holistic care
  • Updates the cancer committee, multidisciplinary cancer teams and community partners on the progress of community outreach programs
  • Seeks and develops innovative means to reach, educate and empower the disparate population in their health care.

Jones is a nationally certified oncology nurse and an active member of the national and local chapters of the Oncology Nursing Society®. She also serves on the board of directors for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Coastal Georgia Affiliates, is a national and local member of the National Black Nurses Association, and volunteers with the American Cancer Society® and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®.
