Imaging Services Available
Digital X-Ray Equipment
Our digital X-ray equipment enhances radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures and is particularly useful in imaging the gastrointestinal tract. Faster and less expensive than conventional X-rays, the digital system decreases cost and diagnosis time.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI is a
non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to look at soft tissue structures inside
the body-particularly muscles, joints, ligaments and cartilage. Using a magnetic
field, radio waves and a computer, the MRI creates a detailed picture. Candler
Hospital MRI is one of the few sites in this region to offer breast MRI and
vacuum-assisted breast biopsy. Candler Hospital's MRI department is American College of Radiology (ACR) accredited.
Computerized Tomography (CT)
CT is a sophisticated X-ray imaging system used to look at abdominal structures and is beneficial in evaluating joint defects and bone fractures using 3-D reconstructions. St. Joseph's Hospital offers 64-slice cardiac scanning.
Nuclear Medicine (Nuclear Scanning)
This technology is used to diagnose and determine the extent of certain organ diseases. A radioactive compound is administered to the patient's bloodstream by swallowing, inhalation or injection. A special camera then scans the patient, detects radiation and produces an image. Both hospitals currently have the newest nuclear cameras offered by Siemens Medical. These are the only two cameras of their kind in Savannah, Georgia.
Ultrasound
We use ultrasound, a
non-invasive sound wave procedure, to provide high-resolution images of
abdominal structures, pregnancies, veins, arteries and extremities. St. Joseph's
ultrasound has the ICVAL vascular accreditation.
Vascular/Neurological Interventional
Procedures
We offer state-of-the-art vascular and neurological
diagnostic and interventional procedures including aneurysm coiling. Our new bi-plane gives the ability to view images in two
planes at one time allowing for shorter procedure times.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Our mobile PET service is available at Candler Hospital two days a week. PET scanning is a simple, non-invasive diagnostic radiology procedure, much like CT or MRI. A radioactive sugar is injected into a vein and targets areas of high or low metabolic activity. This scan is currently used to look at cancer cells, heart muscle activity and seizure activity.
Picture Archival and Communication System (PACS)
PACS is a digital image storage system that eliminates the need for X-ray film. This system can be accessed by all physicians through the Internet.
