Robert E. James named to St. Joseph’s/Candler Board of Trustees

Veteran Savannah banker, Robert E. James, is the newest member of the St. Joseph’s/Candler Board of Trustees.

James has served as President of Carver State Bank since 1971, and previously served as a member of the St. Joseph’s Foundation of Savannah, Inc. In 1973, he revived The Savannah Tribune, one of the nation’s oldest newspapers owned by African Americans, which is now owned by his wife, Shirley Barber James.

The Board of Trustees elected James to a three year term beginning June 1, 2010.

James’ participation in community and charitable endeavors are too numerous to completely cover.

He currently serves on the boards of the Savannah Economic Development Authority, Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way of the Coastal Empire and Step Up Savannah, Inc. He is also a Trustee of St. Philip A. M. E. Church.

He is a life member of the NAACP and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., as well as a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc., The Frogs Club, Inc., and 100 Black Men of Savannah, Inc.

James earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris Brown College and a Master in Business Administration degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.

He was named one of the “100 Most Influential Black Americans” by Ebony magazine in 1978. The National Bankers Association awarded him the Distinguished Service Award in 2003. He received the 2004 Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum Legacy Award and the 2005 Georgia Minority Business CEO Diversity Award.

James and his wife, Shirley, have one adult son, two adult daughters and three grandchildren.
