SJ/C presents Fifth Annual Multi-Generational Health Fair

Free prostate, blood sugar, blood pressure checks, cholesterol checks and other health risk assessments will be offered at the Fifth Annual Multi-Generational Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 7 at Savannah Baptist Center, 704 Wheaton Street.

The annual event is sponsored by St. Joseph’s/Candler’s African American Community Health Initiative, in partnership with the Savannah Chapter of 100 Black Men of America and Community Cardiovascular Council.

Registration by Wednesday, June 4 is required for free prostate screenings by calling St. Joseph's/Candler CareCall at: (912) 819-3368.

The African-American Community Health Initiative is a program of St. Joseph's/Candler. The initiative promotes early detection and prevention of diseases through regular health screenings. The initiative collaborates with local businesses, churches and community groups to educate African-Americans about life-threatening health conditions such as heart disease, prostate cancer, diabetes, stroke and hypertension.

Chartered in 1996, the Savannah Chapter of the 100 Black Men of America provides mentoring programs for local youth that focus on health and wellness, economic development and education. The national 100 Black Men organization began in the 1960s in New York to propel the advancement of African Americans through the pooling of resources and youth development programs to improve the quality of life for blacks and other minorities.

The Community Cardiovascular Council (CCC) reduces death and disabilities caused by cardiovascular disease through a coordinated program of screening, education and treatment. CCC and St. Joseph’s/Candler educate the public about the dangers of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, while offering health screenings to determine risk and assessments, as well as referrals for treatment.
