Center for WellBeing
People with cancer typically turn to traditional therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. But they can also alleviate their symptoms and improve their fitness with a more holistic approach that balances their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. This is why the Center for WellBeing is an integral part of the oncology services provided by the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion.
The Center for WellBeing takes the approach of treating the entire person by providing a host of integrative services, including various touch therapies, fitness classes and exercise programs.
- Massage Therapy - The benefits of massage therapy for cancer patients (inpatient and outpatient) may include pain reduction, increase relaxation, stimulate the lymphatic system, and reduce treatment side effects and muscle tension.
- Acupuncture - A complementary therapy used to manage cancer-related symptoms (such as fatigue, nausea and vomiting); treat side effects of chemotherapy or radiation therapy; boost blood cell count and enhance lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that is integral to your body’s immune defense and natural killer cell (a type of lymphocyte) activity.
- Yoga, Tai Chi and Yogalates - Mindful fitness classes, such as Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi, address the emotional and spiritual elements as well as the physical ones.
- Mind/body/spirit health lectures/workshops
- Stress reduction and meditation seminars
- Live Stronger - An exercise program that is designed to help people tolerate cancer treatment and regain the best possible physical fitness after treatment, as well as improve emotional and mental health.
