This Year's Honoree

PEGGY MINIS TRETHEWEY

Peggy is a native Savannahian. She attended Savannah Country Day School, The Madeira School and Sweet Briar College in Virginia. Today, she divides her time between Palm Beach, Fla. and Savannah.

While living in San Francisco, she served on multiple non-profit boards, as well as the Board of Directors of Carson Products, her family business in Savannah. She served in these roles while maintaining a full-time career in tourism development. She previously served as the business manager of the protocol department of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and currently serves as a Trustee of the non-profit Anatolia Elementary School, High School and College located in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Peggy has always maintained a healthy and active lifestyle which is why she and her husband Peter were shocked to learn in 2019 of her diagnosis of stage-four, non-small cell lung cancer. At the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized to her lymph nodes, adrenal glands and brain. Still living in northern California at that time, she began treatment at the University of California San Francisco Hospital, a prestigious institution known for its state-of-the-art cancer treatment and research. In August 2019, she received gamma knife radiation removing the lesions from her brain, followed by immunotherapy infusions every three weeks. In 2021, after the metastases had been destroyed, she was given targeted radiation to the lung area to assure her cancer-free status.

A year ago, when Peggy and Peter purchased their home at The Landings, she immediately turned to The Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion at St. Joseph’s/Candler for her continuing care. Her mother, father and brother, Henry, had been long-time advocates of the compassionate medical care provided by St. Joseph’s/Candler. Here, she found exactly that in her physician, Dr. Grant Lewis, and all the infusion nurses.

Peggy is proud to follow in her family’s support of St. Joseph’s/Candler and its Foundations. Recently, she and her husband generously donated a blanket warming machine for infusion patients, as she knows from her first-hand experience how much a warm blanket can mean to those undergoing chemotherapy or immunotherapy treatments.
