The Institute for Advanced Bone & Joint Surgery
At St. Joseph's/Candler, we recognize the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle and realize that orthopedic injuries must be treated with urgency, expertise and compassion to maintain quality of life for the patients we serve. This is why the Institute for Advanced Bone and Joint Surgery is a leader in orthopedic surgery. We perform more than 3,300 orthopedic cases each year.
Home to the most experienced and highly trained orthopedists in the region, the Institute for Advanced Bone and Joint Surgery couples the expertise and skill of surgeons with advanced technology to ensure a proper diagnosis and course of treatment for a wide range of bone and joint problems across various orthopedic specialties including:
Exceptional Orthopedic Nursing Care
Of course, no orthopedic team can achieve excellence without exceptional nursing care and at the Institute, our nurses anchor the patient's care every step of the way. From surgery where the operating rooms are staffed with nurses certified by the American Association of Operating Rooms Nurses (AORN) to the orthopedic unit where our nurses are certified by the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON), we have the training and expertise to care for the specific needs of the orthopedic patient.
Rehabilitation Services for Improved Outcomes
Our rehabilitation experts complete the orthopedic team. For many patients, the effort required to fully recover from orthopedic surgery and return to normal daily activity is a big challenge. It takes commitment, determination, motivation, a positive attitude and teamwork in order to improve your recovery outcomes and achieve your desired activity levels.
With training and expertise in the latest techniques for joint replacement therapy, spine therapy, sports therapy, hand therapy, aquatic therapy and pain management, our physical therapists and occupational therapists have the skills necessary to assist the orthopedic patient with the rehabilitation process. They understand that no two patients are exactly alike and work to build customized rehabilitation programs that address the specific needs and goals of each patient. They recognize the importance of providing leadership, encouragement and motivation and are there from start to finish to help the patient stay focused on achieving his or her goals.
Orthopedic Care for Women
Osteoporosis gradually weakens bones, leaving them frail and at higher risk for fractures. In fact, osteoporosis sufferers are usually unaware they have the disease until they fracture a bone. Any bone can be affected, but of special concern are fractures of the hip and spine. A hip fracture almost always requires hospitalization and major surgery. It can impair a person's ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Spinal or vertebral fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain and deformity.
The Institute for Advanced Bone & Joint Surgery is proud to be part of the network of services available at Mary Telfair Women's Hospital. At the Telfair Pavilion, we offer osteoporosis screenings. Using computer bone density imaging technology, experts at the Telfair Pavilion can detect osteoporosis and determine its severity - both crucial pieces of information that help direct care. To make an appointment, please call the Telfair Pavilion at (912) 819-6800.
