St. Joseph's/Candler Leukemia Cup Regatta
The 2013 St. Joseph’s/Candler Leukemia Cup Regatta is about to hit its stride
The regatta will set sail with a cargo of much more than just a race. The year-long event is already underway raising money for Leukemia research through a variety of events.
What began 17 years ago as a sailing competition over the course of one weekend has expanded throughout the entire year including all sorts of sporting competitions and social activities.
“Since its inception, Savannah’s regatta has become so much more than boats and crew racing,” according to Paul P. Hinchey, President & CEO of St. Joseph’s/Candler. “Here, it is an entire community coming together through a series of events to help fight leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers. Previously, events happened over the course of one weekend. Now, we are looking a year-long series of activities and sporting events.”
While a majority of the “Cup” activities still occur during the last half of September, a number of new additions have expanded past that timeline, including an April “Yacht Hop,” showcasing some of the area’s finest yachts and featuring hors d’ouvres prepared by Savannah’s premiere chefs; a Labor Day weekend RUN FOR JANE, a 5K run/walk named in honor of Dr. Jane Philbrick who lost her battle to Leukemia in 2009; and a sporting clays tournament at the Forest City Gun Club set for May.
