Digital Mammography: the Gold Standard in Fight Against Breast Cancer

For women over 40, the most important step she can take is to find a breast abnormality is to get an annual mammogram. Today, the standard is digital mammography, an x-ray image that gives physicians a clearer view of the breast than the old film-based mammography. Because of the clearer view more abnormalities can be found.

All of St. Joseph's/Candler's mammography locations use digital mammography.

Digital mammography is especially effective in women with dense breasts and younger women tend to have denser breasts.

3D Mammography

For some women’s breasts, doctors may need a better look with 3D mammography. A 3D mammogram offers patients a more comprehensive exam by allowing radiologists and doctors to see through possible overlapping tissue in the breast for better visualization of early cancers that may not be seen with conventional mammography.

St. Joseph’s/Candler offers 3D mammography at all five of its imaging centers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule a mammogram?

If you are scheduling a routine screening mammogram and have no known breast problems, such as lumps, drainage or pain, please call 912-819-6800. If you are experiencing a problem or change in your breast, you may need a diagnostic mammogram. Please contact your physician to make an appointment.

How do I receive the results?

You will receive a letter from the radiologists, summarizing the findings in laymen's terms.  Your physician also will receive a copy of the formal report and be able to discuss the findings with you.

Is it possible to receive the results at the time of my appointment?

Yes. If you had your previous mammogram at another facility, please bring copies of the mammogram and report, or a disc with the images and report if it was performed digitally. Please inform the technologist that you would like to receive your results on the day of your appointment.

When should I have a mammogram?

The American College of Radiology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommend annual mammograms beginning at age 40. Your doctor may recommend more frequent or earlier mammograms if you have a breast problem or family history of breast cancer.
