Protect Yourself From Skin Cancer

In Savannah and the Low Country, we live right in the middle of the skin cancer belt. And the rate of skin cancer in Georgia is on the rise.

In fact, new melanoma cases in Georgia is 13 percent higher than the national average. Melanoma is responsible for 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths.

Dr. H.A. Zaren, Medical Director of the Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion, has a particular passion for treating patients with skin cancer. But he also wants people to avoid risky behavior.

Take Action Against Skin Cancer

  • Don't get a sunburn. Dr. Zaren says that five major sunburns during your life increases your risk for melanoma by 50 percent.
  • Don't get in a tanning bed. The UV rays are what cause cancer.
  • Use sunscreen. More specifically, choose a sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays and at least SPF 15. And apply every two hours OR every time you get out of the water.
  • Pay attention to your moles.

Mole Mapping Technology

Your moles and how they change over the years can be the canary in the coal mine for skin cancer.

Are your moles bigger than a pencil eraser? Are the edges asymmetrical? You could be at risk.

At the LCRP, we use the latest mole mapping technology to track every mole on your body annually and take ultra-high-resolution photos of suspicious moles to detect potential cancer.

Utilizing MoleSafe technology, melanographers (nurses specialized in identifying and imaging moles) complete a comprehensive clinical skin assessment, incorporating the latest technology in documenting an individual's skin and moles.

The advanced computer program technology, which is completely non-invasive, is designed to be a yearly surveillance tool to map and evaluate for any clinical changes of moles in an effort to detect melanoma early. The program stores the images, which can be reviewed and compared during follow-up examinations.
