Graduate Medical Education at St. Joseph's/Candler

St. Joseph's/Candler has been a place of learning for as long as it has been a place of healing. Since 2007, the health system has hosted third- and fourth-year medical students from the Medical College of Georgia for clinical rotations and since 2011 has served as the home base for MCG's Southeast Regional Campus. Today, 80 of MCG's 160 Savannah-based students receive clinical training at St. Joseph's/Candler's two anchor hospitals and outpatient centers. The physicians who guide them have been doing this for years, not as an obligation, but as a calling. Teaching is simply part of what St. Joseph's/Candler does.

Residency is the next step in that tradition, and it is built on a foundation that is already strong. Residents will train within a health system that spans two hospital campuses, a growing network of outpatient sites across Southeast Georgia, and a patient population that is as diverse as the region itself. They will have access to cutting-edge technology, high-acuity clinical experiences, and the daily mentorship from  some of the most experienced attending physicians in the state. Physicians who have spent their careers here and are genuinely invested in shaping what comes next.

Why train at St. Joseph's/Candler?

St. Joseph's/Candler is the region's only faith-based, not-for-profit health system, and while one of the most historic in the country, it is also the most advanced in the region and growing to match the population.

Our four facilities, including St. Joseph's Hospital (founded 1875), Candler Hospital (founded 1804), Mary Telfair Women's Hospital (founded 1886), and the Georgia Infirmary (founded 1832), represent nearly 700 cumulative years of dedicated service to this community.

As a resident, you will train alongside top physicians and a Magnet-recognized nursing staff, within specialty institutes that are leaders in cardiovascular care, neurosciences,  oncology and women's health, and inside a system guided by a mission that has never changed: Rooted in God’s love, to treat illness and promote wellness for all people. This is where medicine has deep roots. It is an exceptional place to grow.

Our relationship with the Medical College of Georgia

The partnership between St. Joseph's/Candler and the Medical College of Georgia began in 2007 when both institutions came together to meet the growing need for more physicians in the southeast Georgia. It grew to a four-year medical school and now an unprecedented new residency program.

Savannah: A beautiful place to train

Welcome to the Hostess City! Continuing your medical education at St. Joseph's/Candler means residents have access to provide high-quality care at the region's leading health system in a historic city.

Welcome to the Hostess City

Savannah is one of those cities that gets under your skin in the best possible way. From the moment you arrive, the oak-lined streets, moss-draped squares, and unhurried coastal pace make it feel less like a place you are visiting and more like a place you already belong. As one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the country, Savannah carries a rich sense of history and community that is rare in a city of its size.

Internal Medicine Residency Curriculum

Our curriculum is intentionally designed to do more than prepare residents for success on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Certification Exam. It is built to support deep, meaningful clinical immersion and long-term professional growth.
