Assessment Information Explanation

  1. Heredity - A strong family history of heart disease puts some people at a greater risk than others. Family genetics can't be controlled, but lifestyle and associated risk factors can be.
  2. Cholesterol - High cholesterol increases the risk for coronary heart disease.
  3. Blood Pressure - High blood pressure increases the heart's workload, which increases your chances for cardiovascular disease.
  4. Sedentary Lifestyle - Lack of regular exercise is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke
  5. Excess Weight - Excess weight increases strain on the heart and also raises blood pressure and blood cholesterol.
  6. Smoking - Smokers are two to four times more likely to develop coronary heart disease than nonsmokers. 
  7. Diabetes - Diabetes increases your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Three-quarters of people with diabetes die from some form of heart or blood vessel disease.
  8. Stress - Stress is a contributing factor that affects people differently and may lead to behavior that increases your risks for heart disease. For example, high stress may lead some people to overeat and gain weight.
