South Carolina Cancer Specialists serve LCRP patients in the Low Country

St. Joseph’s/Candler and South Carolina Cancer Specialists work together to provide residents of Bluffton, Hilton Head and the rest of the Low Country the most advanced treatment options without having to go far from home.

With two locations in the Low Country, SC Cancer Specialists offer advanced chemotherapy and other infusion services. Additionally, patients have access to the full range of services provided by the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion including genetic counseling, dietitian, survivorship program, board-certified pharmacists and clinical trials.

Dr. Gary W. Thomas is the medical director of the St. Joseph’s/Candler-SC Cancer Specialists partnership. Dr. Thomas has been practicing oncology and hematology in the Low Country since 1993. He is joined by Dr. Majd Chahin, who additionally has been serving patients in the Low Country for more than 20 years, and Dr. Gregory Haidemenos.

About Dr. Thomas Thomas_Gary_new

Dr. Gary Thomas earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from College of Charleston. He attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina and did a residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Thomas did a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University, The Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

Following his fellowship, Dr. Thomas returned to his home state and began serving the residents of the Low Country. He currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the South Carolina Oncology Society and has been medical director of St. Joseph’s/Candler-SC Cancer Specialists since 2012. Dr. Thomas has served on number committees, been published in nearly a dozen scientific publications and is a member of several scientific and professional societies including American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Physicians and American Cancer Society.

Dr. Thomas is board certified in medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is licensed to practice in both South Carolina and Georgia. Dr. Thomas sees patients at the Hilton Head and Bluffton offices.

About Dr. Chahin Chahin_webpage

Dr. Majd Chahin earned his medical degree from Tishreen University School of Medicine in Latakia, Syria. He did a residency in internal medicine at Lutheran Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and his fellowship in hematology/oncology at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.

Dr. Chahin began practicing in the Low Country in 1995, including serving as medical director of the Sea Island Cancer Center in Port Royal. He has written several chapters in medical books, done numerous research studies and served as principal investigator on more than a dozen clinical trials. Dr. Chahin is a member of the several scholarly societies including the American Medical Association, American Cancer Society and American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Chahin is board certified in medical oncology and is licensed to practice in both South Carolina and Georgia. Dr. Chahin primarily sees patients at the Bluffton location.

About Dr. Haidemenos Haidemenos_headshot_lcrp_pg

Dr. Gregory Haidemenos earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. He earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, and did his internal medicine residency at Roger Williams Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, Boston University School of Medicine in Providence, RI. He went on to do a fellowship in hospice and palliative care at The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, followed by a fellowship in hematology oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he was chief fellow.

Dr. Haidemenos is licensed to practice medicine in Georgia and South Carolina. He is a member of the South Carolina Oncology Society, South Carolina Medical Society, American College of Physicians and American Medical Association.

 

American Society of Clinical Oncology's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Certification Program

SC Cancer Specialists successfully completed a three-year certification program for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet nationally recognized standards for quality cancer care. It is the only practice in the Low Country and Savannah region to earn the certification. The recognition comes from the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Certification Program (QOPI). 

In applying for the certification, St. Joseph’s/Candler SC Cancer Specialists participated in a voluntary comprehensive site assessment against clearly specified standards that are consistent with national guidelines and was successful in meeting the standards and objectives of QCP.
