Digital Mammography: the Gold Standard in Fight Against Breast Cancer

For women over 40, the most important step she can take is to find a breast abnormality is to get an annual mammogram. Today, the standard is digital mammography, an x-ray image that gives physicians a clearer view of the breast than the old film-based mammography. Because of the clearer view more abnormalities can be found.

All of St. Joseph's/Candler's mammography locations use digital mammography.

Digital mammography is especially effective in women with dense breasts and younger women tend to have denser breasts.

3D Mammography

For some women’s breasts, doctors may need a better look with 3D mammography. A 3D mammogram offers patients a more comprehensive exam by allowing radiologists and doctors to see through possible overlapping tissue in the breast for better visualization of early cancers that may not be seen with conventional mammography.

St. Joseph’s/Candler offers 3D mammography at the Telfair Pavilion, SJ/C Imaging Center – Pooler and Telfair Breast Imaging – Eisenhower.
