Patient arrival and registration

When preparing for your hospital stay, it’s important to bring a few essential items to ensure your comfort and facilitate a smooth registration process. Here's a helpful list of what to bring with you:

  • Clothing: Pack comfortable clothing, such as loose-fitting pajamas or a robe, and a set of clothes to wear when you are discharged. You may also want to bring slippers with non-slip soles for walking around.
  • Toiletry Kit: To make your stay more comfortable, bring your personal toiletries, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, and other hygiene items. Hospital supplies are available, but having your preferred products can help you feel more at ease.
  • Medication: Make sure to bring all current medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements. It’s helpful to have them in their original containers so your care team can quickly review them and ensure proper medication management during your stay.
  • Insurance Card: Bring your insurance card and any other relevant insurance documents. These will be needed for registration and to ensure proper billing and coverage of your care.
  • Advance Directives: If you have advance directives, such as a living will or durable power of attorney for health care, it’s important to bring copies. These documents guide your care team on your healthcare preferences should you become unable to communicate your wishes.

Bringing these items will help make your stay as smooth and comfortable as possible, ensuring that your personal and medical needs are handled with ease.

Your care guide: Essential clinical information

Clinical information refers to the essential details about your care during your hospital stay. It includes the procedures and protocols that help guide your treatment, the staff involved in your care, and the regular health checks to monitor your progress. Understanding these processes can help you feel more informed and comfortable during hospitalization. Below is an overview of some key aspects of your care during your stay.

  • Lab Draws: To ensure timely results for your doctor, lab blood draws are typically conducted between 4 and 5 a.m. This allows your healthcare team to have the necessary information for your treatment plan as early as possible.
  • Blood Pressure Checks: The frequency of blood pressure and temperature checks will depend on your specific condition and doctor's orders. These checks help monitor your health status and track your progress throughout your stay.
  • Physical Rounds: Your doctor's visit time may vary depending on their schedule. Be assured that your doctor will review your care plan regularly and communicate any critical updates during rounds.
  • Patient Care Staff: Your care team includes nurses, patient care technicians (PCTs), and unit clerks, all working together to ensure you receive comprehensive care. Other healthcare professionals may be involved based on your specific needs.
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA): HIPAA regulations protect the privacy of your medical information, ensuring confidentiality during your hospital stay. For more information, visit www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa or call (866) 627-7748 to learn more about your privacy rights.

Guide for discharge

Your doctor will write a discharge order, and a nurse will assist you in preparing to go home. Depending on your needs, patient educators, social workers, and other specialists may provide essential instructions for your care at home. We understand that coordinating your discharge may take some time, but please know that every effort will be made to ensure the process is smooth and timely.

To make things easier, please arrange for transportation ahead of time. Typically, patients are ready to leave about two hours after the discharge order is given, with 10 a.m. being a typical discharge time, with a goal of no later than noon if possible. We appreciate your patience and are here to support you every step of the way.
