African-American Health Information & Resource Center

African-American Health Information & Resource Center

Restoring health. Preserving hope.

The African-American Health Information & Resource Center (AAHIRC) is more than a building — it is a sanctuary for healing, knowledge and equity. Rooted in the mission of St. Joseph’s/Candler of health access for all people, this Center is a beacon of possibility in the face of systemic disparities.

Strategically located in a historically underserved area of Savannah, AAHIRC directly addresses the deep, persistent impact of poverty, which too often feeds cycles of crime, food insecurity, housing instability and poor health outcomes. Here, we break that cycle by meeting our neighbors where they are, providing them with free, culturally relevant, life-saving services. We see our mission as more than beating statistics. We are building lasting community trust and shaping health equity as the standard — not the exception.

Our services: Health, wellness and community support

The AAHIRC is a community-centered health hub offering a wide range of free programs and services for individuals and families. We believe wellness includes physical, emotional and social health — and we work every day to ensure our community has access to all three.

The AAAHIRC is your one-stop hub for health/wellness, education and social support — all under one roof. We’ve built our model around meeting people where they are, creating a trusted space that feels like the heart of the community. The Center is here to serve as a central gathering point for resources and empowerment — right in the neighborhood, where it’s needed most.

A revolutionary model of health justice

The African-American Health Information & Resource Center is a grassroots effort started by St. Joseph's/Candler in 1999 to address the "digital divide" that existed at that point in time in our history. This divide created a gap in healthcare literacy due to the lack of available healthcare information for African Americans due to little to no access to computers and online resources through the internet. Partnering with Savannah State University, a program was developed to close the gap in health care illiteracy and since that time has grown and developed to include programs and resources that support a healthy and positive lifestyle for the entire family.

Our Vision

To partner with community leaders, residents, and organizations to reduce the impact of health disparities by uplifting education, offering proactive screenings, and strengthening connections — all through culturally attuned grassroots efforts. Our core objectives include the following:

  • Community Collaboration – Engage local voices in shaping health education, awareness campaigns, screenings and events.
  • Culturally Competent Care – Help the medical community understand the cultural and historical realities of African-American patients.
  • Empowerment & Pride – Inspire commitment to health by promoting self-respect, cultural pride and proactive well-being.
  • Health Equity – Actively reduce conditions that disproportionately impact African-Americans, from chronic illness to mental health challenges.
