Angels of Mercy Volunteers

About the Angels of Mercy Volunteer Corps

The Angels of Mercy Volunteer Corps serves the community through active volunteerism and is composed of St. Joseph's/Candler co-workers, family members and friends. Named in honor of the Sisters of Mercy and their nearly 200-year mission of service to the poor and underserved of coastal Georgia, the group enhances the mission, vision and values of St. Joseph's/Candler by promoting wellness for all people and assisting underserved members of our communities. This initiative is part of why St. Joseph’s/Candler stands apart as a leader in clinical care: our time and resources go beyond treatment and into the hands and hearts of our community.

Our history

The Angels of Mercy were established in 1996 in response to the City of Savannah’s need for assistance during the Olympic Torch Run event. Since then, the group has found its purpose in supporting nonprofit organizations and local social agencies throughout coastal Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry. With nearly 25 years of service, the Angels of Mercy have logged over 100,000 volunteer man-hours in various communities in the region. Our community members, families and loved ones come together to make sure that hope and health are available to all who need it, no matter their station or circumstance.

Our impact

On average, the Angels of Mercy contribute to at least one community service project each month. The group is sustained by the generous donations of fellow health system co-workers, which fund the monthly volunteer activities and necessary project supplies. The Angels of Mercy have received several honors for their contributions, including the J. C. Penny Golden Rule Volunteer Group of the Year Award. Numerous community agencies have also recognized them for their ongoing support, civic dedication and care for the underserved throughout Savannah and the surrounding areas.
