Georgia Infirmary

Georgia Infirmary: A legacy of community care in Savannah

The Georgia Infirmary holds a distinguished place in Savannah’s history. It has provided nearly two centuries of healthcare services and community support.

Established on December 24, 1832, the Georgia Infirmary was the first hospital in the United States founded to care for African Americans, making it a beacon of healthcare and social progress.

Today, the Georgia Infirmary continues to meet the needs of Savannah and Southeast Georgia, offering a range of health services to support the most vulnerable populations.

A historical legacy of healthcare and education

From its establishment in 1832 to its permanent move to 1900 Abercorn Street in 1838, the Georgia Infirmary has stood as a pillar of health and wellness for the community. After surviving the Civil War, the Infirmary became one of the first nursing schools for African Americans in 1904. The Infirmary became the nation’s first Medicare-certified Comprehensive Outpatient Rehab Facility, even receiving recognition from TIME magazine. Its innovative services expanded in the following years, making it the first licensed Adult Day Health Center outside of Atlanta.

Expanding services to support Southeast Georgia

In 1997, it was critical to launch SOURCE, a statewide program designed to provide case management services to the elderly and disabled. Of the three SOURCE sites in Georgia, the Georgia Infirmary remains the only one that still offers this vital service. The center further expanded its outreach by establishing the CCSP (Community Care Services Program) in 2018, allowing it to provide case management to a broader population.

Today, the Georgia Infirmary operates an Adult Day Health Center, provides SOURCE and CCSP case management services, and hosts an onsite Primary Care Clinic. With a satellite office in Baxley, Georgia, the Infirmary extends its services to 27 counties across Southeast Georgia.

Located across from Williams Court Apartments, a 151-unit low-income housing complex, the Georgia Infirmary remains uniquely positioned to serve Savannah’s most at-risk populations. Its commitment to offering comprehensive healthcare services in one location continues to make it a community cornerstone.
