Gynecologic oncology using the da Vinci Surgical System at the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion
Advancements in surgical technology have transformed the way gynecologic cancers are treated, offering patients more precise and highly effective options. St. Joseph’s/Candler and The Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion (LCRP) provides the most advanced surgical techniques available, including the use of the da Vinci Surgical System for treating cancers of the female reproductive system. This state-of-the-art robotic-assisted technology enables unparalleled accuracy and faster recovery times for patients. For women facing a diagnosis of gynecologic cancer—including endometrial, cervical, ovarian, vaginal and vulvar cancers—having access to innovative, minimally invasive surgical options is crucial.
Our dedicated team, led by Dr. Sarah Gill, a board-certified gynecologic oncologist, is at the forefront of these advanced surgical treatments, ensuring that each patient receives the highest level of care tailored to their unique needs.

Advantages of da Vinci Surgery
The da Vinci Surgical System offers numerous benefits for gynecologic cancer patients:
- Shorter Recovery Time: Patients typically benefit from a faster return to daily activities compared to traditional surgical methods.
- Enhanced Quality of Life: Patients often experience a higher quality of life post-surgery due to the low-impact nature of the robotic system.
- Reduced Surgical Morbidity: The precision of the system leads to fewer complications and a smoother recovery process.
- Improved 3-D Visualization: Surgeons gain superior visualization, allowing for more accurate sampling of potentially cancerous tissues.
Additionally, this noninvasive approach requires only five small incisions instead of a single large one, resulting in less blood loss. This efficiency enables patients to move more quickly to subsequent treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, if necessary.
Comprehensive gynecologic oncology services
At the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion, our gynecologic oncology services encompass the treatment of various pre-cancerous and cancerous conditions.. Symptoms like bleeding, pain, pressure or bloating can aid in early detection. However, ovarian cancer remains particularly aggressive and often lacks early warning signs. Currently, there are no approved screening tests for ovarian cancer, but our experts diligently monitor technological advancements through ongoing research efforts.
