St. Joseph’s/Candler Breast Surgeon Dr. Anita Johnson brings experience, use of technology to treat breast cancer patients
SJ/C: Why did you decide to become a doctor?
As a child, I discovered the fascination of the sciences and simply enjoyed it. My neighbor was one of the first African American physicians in the state and I witnessed the impact he had on the community.
SJ/C: What made you choose breast surgery?
I enjoy taking care of women. My decision was made on that and the advancements made in this arena.
SJ/C: What are some common conditions you treat?
Mostly breast cancer and high-risk disease. I also treat benign conditions.
SJ/C: How do you use technology in your field?
I have always used breast ultrasound in the clinic as well as the operative suite. I also enjoy using some of the latest surgical devices in the operating room for analyzing the tissue that is removed to increase the chances that all of the cancer has been removed. These devices assist in eliminating the need for a second surgery. I also enjoy performing nipple sparing mastectomies when a woman is candidate. For most women who are candidates to keep their breast, I attempt to hide the scar on most occasions.
SJ/C: What do you see in the future for treating breast cancer specifically?
The future for breast cancer will change dramatically in the upcoming years. Some women will be able to have surgical intervention in the clinic with the use of ablative techniques. Less will be more. Surgeons will be able to tell in real time if the entire tumor was resected using intraoperative fluorescence imaging. Surgeons may also become involved in treating breast cancer cells in the operative suite with intra-tumoral injection.
SJ/C: What is some common advice you share with women for their overall wellbeing?
Breast cancer treatment has evolved over the past few decades. Continue to watch your diet, weight, minimal alcohol intake, and we encourage an exercise regimen for all women. Always know your family’s cancer history and proceed with getting your recommended mammograms.
Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy lovely things. The beach, fishing, tennis, great music, church, public speaking and pretty much anything outside.
