The Telfair Mammography Fund: Honoring Mary Telfair's Legacy
When Mary Telfair left provisions and stipulations in her will for the creation of a women's hospital in Savannah in 1875, she cemented her legacy as a compassionate and trailblazing woman ahead of her time.
Mary envisioned a place where women, especially those in financial need, could receive proper support and healthcare — a progressive perspective quite different from the norm at that point in history. Built in 1884 and officially opened in 1886, the Telfair Hospital for Females became the women-focused healthcare institution from which St. Joseph's/Candler traces its roots.
Since merging with the Telfair Hospital in 1960, St. Joseph's/Candler has continued Mary's mission to offer support and healthcare services to the women, children, and families of our local community.

St. Joseph’s/Candler believes no woman should have to worry about paying or struggle to pay for potentially life-saving screenings or treatments. In order to uphold the legacy Mary Telfair began, the St. Joseph's/Candler Mammography Fund was proudly created in 2005.
The Telfair Mammography Fund provides no-cost breast health services to uninsured and underinsured women (and men) throughout our community. These services include screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, MRIs, image-guided breast biopsies, surgical costs where appropriate, and more — all critical care that would otherwise be out of reach.One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Early detection is one of the most powerful tools we have, and the survival rate climbs dramatically when the disease is caught early. But that early detection only works if women can actually get screened — regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.
Since its founding, the Telfair Mammography Fund has helped thousands of women access the screenings and care they needed, when they needed it most.
