Meet Bertice Berry, Ph.D

Bertice Berry, Ph.D is an author, sociologist and educator who resides in Savannah. She grew up poor, one of seven children to a single mother. Despite being told in high school she "was not college material," Bertice went on to earn her Ph.D. in sociology from Kent State University. She spent years teaching at Kent State before she left to pursue a career in entertaining, lecturing and comedy. Bertice hosted and co-produced a nationally syndicated talk show in 1993 and appeared on Oprah, Jay Leno and other shows. Bertice is also an author and received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work in 2012. Her proudest honor, however, is being called mom by her five children and becoming a grandmother in 2015. Bertice's video is sponsored by MembersFirst Credit Union and Telfair Board of Directresses.

Special thanks to WTOC for producing all the SmartWomen videos.

Make a donation in Bertice's honor

We hope you are as inspired by Bertice Berry as we are and would consider making a donation to the Telfair Mammography Fund in her honor. The goal of the Mary Telfair Women's Hospital and the Mammography Fund is to ensure that all women have access to mammography, even if they have no insurance and cannot afford it. The SmartWomen Luncheon & Expo has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Telfair Mammography Fund to meet this goal since its inception over a decade ago.
