Sharing and Touching Lives: Vernice Rackett, Executive Director

St. Joseph’s/Candler Foundations has raised over $7.7 million since the inception of the Advancing Excellence: Touching Lives campaign.  A dedicated task force, led by campaign Co-Chairs Scott Lauretti and Dr. Julia Mikell, has invested much time to ensure the campaign’s success and growth to date.  Thank you to our task force members: Russ Peterson, Stewardship Chair, Henry H. Minis, Honorary Chair, Diana Barrow, Sara Daniel, Emily Kehoe, Dr. David Knopf, Cliff McCurry, Cindy Murphy, Lori Pitt, Dr. Glen Scarbrough, and Dr. Will Wallace. There are numerous Friends of the Foundations to acknowledge: The 1804 Club and Mercy Society donors, Ambassador Circle partners, and Legacy Circle (planned gifts) contributors. Giving Clubs enjoyed growth ranging from 23% to 45%.

SmartWomen and Candler Clays sponsorships enjoyed record breaking revenue.  A thank you to all Give Smart Coworkers, passionate volunteers for Fishin’ for Jamie, Get Your Rear in Gear, The Danny Brown Golf Tournament along with the grass roots community fundraisers who embrace the mission: Rooted in God’s love we treat illness and promote wellness for all people.

Your generosity led by the guidance of the SJ/C Foundations’ Board of Trustees, allowed over $1.3 million to be granted in FY16 to enhance patient care, vital programs, education, equipment and facilities enhancement and community outreach.

The loss of a loved one and thankfulness for caregivers has been the catalyst for giving and positive change…a healing.  In late spring, Monica Mastrianni- Hester, Clay and Wesley Hester, Patrick and Alyssa Mastrianni, family and friends of the late, beloved community leader Tommy Hester, gathered to dedicate to his caregivers and physicians a newly renovated CCU Waiting Room at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Every detail of the renovation was considered with thoughtfulness and purpose by Monica, herself an architect. Her vision made possible by the Hester Family gift, and more gifts than anyone anticipated, transformed a hospital waiting area into a haven of serenity and reflection enhanced by peaceful images. On a recent patient visit, I walked by the CCU waiting room and was drawn to enter.  I viewed more family and friends waiting than I would ever have expected.  They were together joined in purpose…comfortable, quiet, and reflective. I will never forget their faces.   While weary, they still looked full of hope. Through loss and grief, change is inevitable and meaningful purpose is found.

With gratitude,

Vernice
