A record number of school supplies collected through St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Danny’s Brown Box collection were delivered to students at three schools on Tuesday, Aug. 21. More than 1,500 students at Garden City, Brock and Andrea B. Williams elementary schools will share nearly 70,000 supplies collected by St. Joseph’s/Candler co-workers.

Danny’s Brown Box supplies were collected from July to mid-August. St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Angels of Mercy volunteers delivered the supplies to each school.

Danny’s Brown Box, named after the former St. Joseph’s/Candler human resources vice president, is an outreach program to help children obtain the supplies they need to excel in the classroom. Boxes were positioned in departments throughout the health system as co-workers donated book bags, pens, paper, pencils, notebooks, rulers, crayons, markers, glue and much more.

“I’ve been a principal for 13 years, and we’ve been able to count on the generosity of St. Joseph’s/Candler to provide this annual school supply donation to our students,” says Renae McCullough, principal at Garden City Elementary School. “What we do is distribute these supplies to all the classrooms so that teachers have these readily available when a child does show up to school without the supplies to participate in the learning experiences.

“When a child comes to school without paper, without pencil, without crayon and sees the child next to them, beside them, in front of them, you don’t realize the impact that has on that child. So that lessens the concerns that we have to have and it releases unnecessary stress and anxiety for our students. We just can’t be more pleased with the generosity and grateful for these donations for the sake of our children.”
