BLUFFTON, S.C.  – The top beam was installed Wednesday on the new St. Joseph’s/Candler Bluffton Campus and Low Country residents are that much closer to consolidated medical and oncology services.

St. Joseph's/Candler President & CEO Paul P. Hinchey addresses the crowd surrounded by JE Dunn crew members at the Topping Off Ceremony at the new Bluffton Medical Campus.

Construction on the 40,000-square-foot facility in Buckwalter Place is moving rapidly and the first phase will be open early next year.  Phase one will cost $30 million with an overall cost of $35.5 million.

The campus is designed to greatly expand services and access to healthcare for a rapidly growing community. It will employ a total of 63 people with an estimated annual payroll of $6.6 million.

“Today we are celebrating a milestone event of what will eventually be a $40 plus million dollar commitment – not only to area patients but to the entire community,” said Paul P. Hinchey, President & CEO of St. Joseph’s/Candler. “As you can see, we are putting our money where our commitment is. Our commitment and investment here not only improves the health and long term well-being of this community, it serves as an economic engine that will drive more people to this area and inspire more development, more jobs, more prosperity and more innovation.”

The tradition of the topping off ceremony

Topping out ceremonies are a traditional way of toasting the last or highest beam placed during building construction.

Wednesday, Hinchey and dignitaries from the Town of Bluffton  joined to celebrate the last beam set in place.

St. Joseph’s/Candler has provided medical services in Bluffton and Hilton Head for more than 16 years. This development will consolidate most of these medical services in one location that is at the center of growth in the Bluffton market.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS:

  • Two weeks ago more 40 trucks caravanned for hours to pour more than 450 tons concrete for one of the two the radiation oncology vaults.
  • The vaults must be several feet thick and lined with lead to safely contain radiation used to shrink the tumors of cancer patients.
  • Crews have erected 200 tons of structural steel
  • The building will provide for spiritual healing with access to a chapel housing original stained glass works of art using pieces from St. Joseph’s Hospital stained glass from the early 1900’s.

A key component of this project will be the development of a regional oncology campus that will add another linear accelerator for radiation treatment and expand medical oncology services that will virtually eliminate the need for patients to travel to Savannah.
