SJ/C: What is the one piece of advice that you wish your patients would follow and not ignore?
 
Dr. Porter: Smoking cessation is the primary advice that I wish people would listen to.  Smoking has so many negative effects on a patient’s lifestyle physically, mentally, emotionally and financially.  It also affects those around you, whether the patient recognizes it or not.  Please stop smoking.  Better late than never.
 
SJ/C: Why did you choose this specialty?
 
Dr. Porter: Pulmonology and Critical Care medicine is appealing to me because it involves all aspects of the patient and, to some degree, every organ in the body.  We are involved with the entire continuum of care from preventative measures to critical care.  It is a constantly evolving area of medicine and it is an honor to be on the front lines of the daily battle against disease and illness.
 
SJ/C: What do you see on the horizon for this specialty?
 
Dr. Porter: With continued advancements in the healthcare field, both technical and clinical, Pulmonology and Critical Medicine continues to become more efficient with advancements in quality of care.  In the years ahead, I believe there will be significant advancement in the treatment of lung cancer and asthma.
 
SJ/C: What are the two top key pieces of advice that you give your patients?
 
Dr. Porter: I can’t stress enough the benefits of smoking cessation.  In addition to that, maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle can pay large dividends as we age.
 
SJ/C: Do you have a story where you thought, “This is why I choose to practice medicine?”
 
Dr. Porter: During residency at Emory University in Atlanta, the Pulmonologists were the doctors that took total care of the patients in the Intensive Care Unit.  Their passion for the quality of care and their compassion with the patient’s families was impressive and very inspiring.
