Physical Therapy

Physical therapy helps individuals return to a more normal, active life as quickly, safely and efficiently as possible. It is an essential element of recovery for those experiencing the problems of temporary or permanent disability, pain and loss of function related to injury or disease, loss of a limb or birth defects. Our physical therapists in the St. Joseph's/Candler health system are specially trained at evaluating physical problems, including those in newborns, and recommending the most appropriate treatment course. They also can help to create overall fitness regimens and develop workplace injury prevention programs.

Physical therapy can help to:

  • Increase and maintain muscle strength and endurance, as well as increase coordination
  • Decrease swelling/inflammation of joints, decrease pain and promote optimal health
  • Restore and increase range of motion in joints
  • Decrease muscle spasm and spasticity
  • Regain maximum possible movement, strength and function after strokehead injuryspinal cord damage, neuropathy or peripheral nerve damage/injury
  • Promote wound healing, prevent scarring, and maintain normal muscle and joint functions after burns, skill ulcers or pressure sores
  • Promote rapid return to athletics or work following an injury.
