Internal Medicine Research, Quality Improvement and Scholarship

Internal Medicine Resident-Oriented Research Program at St. Joseph’s/Candler

The Internal Medicine research program at St. Joseph’s/Candler is built on a strong foundation of academic curiosity, innovation, and mentorship, offering residents a dynamic environment to engage in research, quality improvement and scholarly work. This program is designed to help residents understand how research is conducted, evaluated, and applied to patient care. Through our partnership with the Medical College of Georgia and the MCG Savannah Campus, residents have access to a broad academic network, faculty expertise, ongoing research projects and resources that support meaningful scholarly development. A dedicated research coordinator and medical librarian are available throughout training to help residents develop ideas, navigate the literature, and successfully execute their projects.

Residents are encouraged to begin scholarly work early and share it widely. Each November, the annual Research Day held in partnership with the MCG Savannah Campus gives residents the opportunity to present projects spanning clinical care, quality improvement, and community health. Residents are encouraged to present their work at the Georgia American College of Physicians annual conference as well as regional and national meetings. A jeopardy coverage system provides the protected time and scheduling flexibility to make attendance at these events realistic. Engaging in research sharpens critical thinking, strengthens scientific communication, and deepens the ability to evaluate and apply evidence-based medicine, building skills that will serve residents well throughout their careers.

Dear Prospective Residents,

On behalf of the Library, I am delighted to welcome you and introduce the many ways we support the St. Joseph’s/Candler Residency Program in Partnership with the Medical College of Georgia (MCG). We are proud to stand alongside our residents as partners in learning, discovery, and excellent patient care.

Through Augusta University, the library offers a wealth of authoritative resources to support your clinical practice and academic success. These include extensive collections of core and specialty journals, eBooks, board review materials, and evidence‑based clinical care tools, all available both on campus and remotely. Whether you are preparing for rounds, answering point‑of‑care questions, or exploring a research idea, our resources are designed to meet you where you are.

Equally important, I am your dedicated librarian at the MCG Savannah campus.  Each resident has access to expert research assistance, including advanced literature searching, review support, citation management, and guidance on publishing and research impact. I collaborate closely with residents during the research process, helping to save time and strengthen scholarly work.

I warmly invite you to make full use of the library resources and to view us as a trusted partner throughout your residency. We look forward to supporting your success and being part of your journey.

With best wishes,

Stephanie Henderson
