Where can I get a mammogram?

St. Joseph’s/Candler has five imaging centers, plus the mobile mammography unit to serve women across the region

Death rates from breast cancer have been dropping for the last 20 years. Researchers believe that’s due to early detection through screening and increased awareness.

“Mammography is the best detection for early breast cancer,” says Pattie Barnes, St. Joseph’s/Candler mammographer. “It’s the standard of care.”

A mammogram is radiographic imaging of the breast to detect and evaluate breast changes. St. Joseph’s/Candler offers 3D digital mammograms for screening and diagnostic purposes. 3D mammography takes multiple images of the breast from different angles, creating a detailed three-dimensional picture.

Yearly breast cancer screenings are recommended for women beginning at age 40, unless there’s a family history. If, for example, your mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at 45, you should start screening 10 years prior, at 35.

“I know people have that stigma in their mind that it hurts or it’s painful, but we are finding things – three, four, five milliliters – on mammograms that we never found before,” says Barnes. “We are keeping patients from having huge lumpectomies, and we are finding it before it can spread.”

If you need a mammogram or the next time your annual checkup comes around, St. Joseph’s/Candler has several convenient locations to schedule your screening mammogram. These are:
