Frequently Asked Questions

I have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. What does that mean?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a progressive condition caused by wrist compression of the median nerve. Symptoms include pain, weakness, and numbness in the hand and wrist, which may worsen over time. Those performing repetitive motion tasks are at higher risk, though the condition can develop in anyone.

What type of therapy is involved after a carpal tunnel release?

After carpal tunnel release surgery, therapy may include splinting, soft tissue mobilization, wound management, and strengthening exercises, although not everyone requires therapy. Patients are encouraged to move their fingers to reduce swelling and pain post-surgery.

What is a ganglion cyst? How is it removed?

A ganglion cyst is a synovial cyst from the lining of a tendon sheath, often appearing near the base of the thumb. Treatment depends on symptoms and may include aspiration or surgical removal if it affects hand function.

My thumb hurts when I pinch objects or turn doorknobs. What is the problem?

Pain at the base of the thumb, or carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, may indicate arthritis. This condition can cause discomfort with tasks like gripping or turning objects. To reduce strain on the joint, avoid pinching with the thumb directly over the index finger. If pain persists, consult a hand surgeon.

I have been diagnosed with "tennis elbow." Please explain what this means.

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, involves pain in the muscles that extend the wrist and fingers, often from overuse or repetitive motion. It commonly affects tennis players but can occur in anyone engaged in repetitive arm movements.

My doctor diagnosed me with a scaphoid fracture. Why will I be in a cast for three to four months?

The scaphoid bone near the thumb has limited blood flow, especially in its proximal portion. As a result, healing can take longer—up to 20 weeks—and may sometimes require surgery.

I fractured my wrist three months ago. When can I expect the swelling to resolve?

Swelling can persist for up to a year after an injury. Compression garments may provide comfort, and your physician or therapist may offer additional advice to manage swelling.

How long will it take for my strength to return to "normal"?

Recovery depends on the injury type, immobilization period, and rehabilitation commitment. Patients typically regain full strength between six to twelve months.

My child has been diagnosed with syndactyly. What does this mean, and what treatment is available?

Syndactyly is a congenital condition where fingers are fused together. Surgery is often recommended, followed by therapy for scar management and soft tissue recovery to improve function.

I just had ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery. When will I be able to return to work?

Return to work depends on job demands and progress in recovery. Consult your physician and therapist for specific guidance based on your rehabilitation progress.
