Mobile Mammography

Mobile 3-D mammography from the experts at St. Joseph's/Candler

Early detection saves lives, and at St. Joseph’s/Candler, we are making it easier than ever for women to access essential breast cancer screenings. Our Mobile Mammography Unit, the "Screen Machine," directly brings expert digital breast screenings to women throughout Southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Access to life-saving care can often be a barrier to patients in rural locations, and the Screen Machine eliminates that barrier, making the highest standard of care available to everyone. Whether you need a routine screening or a diagnostic mammogram, our state-of-the-art mobile unit provides a convenient and confidential experience—because your health and your future matter.

Why annual mammograms are critical

Regular mammograms are the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early—often before symptoms appear—when it is most treatable. Women 40 and older should receive annual mammograms to ensure early detection, while women between ages 35-39 may opt for a baseline screening. For those with personal or family histories of breast cancer, screening recommendations may vary. If you have concerns about breast health, consult your physician to determine the best approach for your individual needs.

What to expect on the Screen Machine

Having a mammogram on the mobile unit is just as safe and reliable as receiving one at any of our imaging centers. Our advanced 3-D imaging technology give us the clearest picture of your breast from mammography. We prioritize safety, privacy and comfort for every woman who steps aboard. Our team is dedicated to providing the highest level of care in an accessible and welcoming setting.

Insurance and financial assistance

We believe no woman should go without a mammogram due to financial concerns. The Screen Machine accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid and Champus/Tricare. For women who do not have insurance and meet certain financial qualifications, assistance is available. If you are at least 40 years old, uninsured, and in need of a mammogram, you may qualify for support through the Mammography Fund Hotline at 912-819-7055.

Who should get screened?

Screening mammograms are recommended for:

  • Women aged 40 and older (annually)
  • Women ages 35-39 for a baseline mammogram

However, there are some exceptions. If any of the following apply, consult your physician before scheduling a screening mammogram:

  • You are currently undergoing treatment or have a personal history of breast cancer.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are experiencing breast concerns, a diagnostic mammogram—which requires a physician’s order—may be recommended instead of a routine screening. Speak with your doctor if you notice any of the following:

  • A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • Changes in the size, shape or symmetry of the breasts
  • Unexplained changes in skin color, texture or appearance
  • Dimpling, puckering or retraction of the skin or nipple
  • Nipple discharge, scaling, crusting or inversion
  • Persistent, localized breast pain

Your health is too important to ignore any of these symptoms. If you are experiencing any breast changes, schedule an evaluation with your doctor as soon as possible.
