Frequently Asked Questions

When should I be concerned about my breathing?

If you experience frequent shortness of breath or symptoms that don’t resolve with rest, contact your physician immediately. Early intervention can make a significant difference in managing respiratory conditions. Even if your symptoms feel mild, they may indicate an underlying issue that could worsen over time without treatment.

Is it ever too late to quit smoking?

No, your body benefits from quitting smoking at any stage. Quitting can repair some of the damage and significantly improve your health. Over time, you may notice better lung function, increased energy, and a reduced risk of serious health conditions. Our Tobacco Cessation Program is designed to help you take this life-changing step.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a condition where inflammation narrows the airways, often triggered by allergens, infections, or cold air. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, wheezing, and coughing. With proper management, asthma attacks can be controlled effectively, allowing you to maintain a normal, active lifestyle. Regular follow-ups with a pulmonologist can ensure your treatment plan is working well or make sure we pivot if your plan should be adjusted.

What is emphysema?

Emphysema causes physical deterioration of the lungs, reducing oxygen exchange. Symptoms include progressive shortness of breath, fatigue, and appetite loss. Although the damage cannot be reversed, treatments such as pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen therapy, and medications can improve your quality of life and help you stay active.

What causes chronic bronchitis and emphysema?

Smoking is the leading cause of both conditions. Nearly 500,000 Americans die annually from smoking-related illnesses. These diseases develop over time, so addressing risk factors like smoking early can significantly impact your long-term health. Preventive measures like vaccinations and regular pulmonary check-ups can also help manage your risks.

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Symptoms include fever, chills, pain when breathing, and increased sputum production. Prompt medical care and, if necessary, antibiotics or antiviral treatments can help prevent complications. Staying up to date on vaccines and seeking early treatment for symptoms are key to protecting your health.

Is oxygen flammable?

While oxygen isn’t flammable, it supports combustion. To ensure your safety, avoid smoking or using open flames near oxygen sources. If you’re using oxygen therapy, your care team will provide detailed instructions to keep you and your home environment safe.
