The road to recovery: What to expect
At St. Joseph’s/Candler, we’re here to support you every step of the way during your inpatient rehabilitation. Our personalized care plans and daily therapy sessions are designed to help you regain the strength, confidence, and independence you need to get back to living your life.
Therapy sessions
Patients participate in three hours of therapy daily, tailored to individual needs across three disciplines:
- Physical Therapy: Strength, balance, and mobility restoration.
- Occupational Therapy: Techniques for managing daily tasks like grooming, cooking, and cleaning.
- Recovery of speaking, swallowing, and cognitive skills.
Support person/family
While in the rehab unit, your family or support person is welcome and encouraged to attend therapy sessions regularly. Sometimes, a family/support person must attend therapy sessions, as determined by the rehab team. Your social worker will let you and your family know when they need to participate in therapies so they can be adequately trained to help you when you leave the hospital.
Discharge planning: Your next steps
Our team begins planning for your discharge from the day you are admitted. We aim to prepare you for an independent return to a home or community setting. Discharge planning includes:
- Coordination with your physician and rehab team to arrange follow-up care.
- Recommendations for home health services, outpatient therapies, or continued support.
Additional rehab features

For patients requiring short-term skilled care, our Candler Hospital Sub-Acute Unit offers nursing and therapy services for those not yet ready to return home. Services include:
- Five-day-a-week therapy.

What to bring
It is crucial to our staff that you feel at home while on our unit. We ask that families bring the following personal items for the patient to participate in therapies and daily care. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and sturdy, non-skid shoes.
- Personal care items (toothbrush, cosmetics, glasses, hearing aids, etc.).
- Hearing aids in a labeled container with your name
- Dentures in labeled containers with your name
- Adaptive equipment you may have used at home to help our staff assess your needs.
To protect your valuables, we recommend leaving them at home.
