3D Mammography: The Gold Standard in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

The most effective way to combat disease is prevention through early detection. For our breast cancer center at St. Joseph’s/Candler, we implement strategies to empower our patients to fight cancer before it significantly develops. Today, the standard is 3D mammography, an X-ray imaging technique that provides physicians with a clearer view of the breast compared to the older film-based mammography. This enhanced clarity allows for the detection of more abnormalities, ensuring earlier intervention and treatment.

At St. Joseph's/Candler, all mammography locations are equipped with state-of-the-art digital mammography technology. This method is particularly effective for women with dense breast tissue, a condition more common in younger women. By offering the latest in mammography innovations, we are committed to ensuring that every patient has access to the highest standard of care, giving them peace of mind and the best possible chance at recovery.

3D Mammography: A closer look

Breast tissue makeup varies among individuals; in some cases, a more detailed examination is required to detect abnormalities. 3D mammography is an advanced imaging technology that provides a comprehensive view, allowing radiologists to see through overlapping breast tissue and detect early cancers that might otherwise remain hidden. By offering a more precise analysis, 3D mammography enhances accuracy and reduces the need for follow-up imaging, leading to quicker and more confident diagnoses.

By giving our patients access to this technology, we are improving outcomes and actively participating in the expansion of options for breast cancer medicine. The ability to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages enables us to offer more effective treatment plans with fewer invasive procedures, ultimately improving our patient’s quality of life. St. Joseph's/Candler provides 3D mammography at all five imaging centers, ensuring every patient has access to the most thorough breast care available. Our commitment to innovation and excellence in breast imaging empowers our patients with the best tools for early detection and successful treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule a mammogram?

Is it possible to receive the results at the time of my appointment?

Yes, it is possible. If you had a previous mammogram at another facility, please bring copies of the images and report (or a digital disc if it was performed digitally). Inform the technologist at your appointment if you would like to receive your results that day.
