St. Joseph’s/Candler has three specialized wound care centers across the region that offer several options to treat wounds effectively and timely.

Improve healing with the Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Care

Most wounds heal completely after two weeks. But for 6.7 million Americans, wounds don’t heal that quickly and become chronic sources of pain and possible infection. St. Joseph’s/Candler has three specialized wound care centers across the region that offer several options to treat wounds effectively and timely.

Our wound care centers provide specialized treatment for a variety of acute and chronic non-healing wounds, including burns, diabetic ulcers and peristomal skin irritations. We also treat pressure ulcers, traumatic wounds, surgical wounds, vasculitis and venous insufficiency. Our centers use advanced clinical tools like hyperbaric oxygen therapy to speed up healing. This therapy involves state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers that utilize pure oxygen to enhance healing.

Our advanced resources and knowledge can make a significant difference for those suffering from chronic wounds.

Specialized comprehensive care for chronic wounds

At the Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Care, we create individualized treatment plans using the latest clinical tools and traditional practices. Bio-engineered skin grafting and advanced dressing options, such as silver-infused or anti-bacterial dressings, are just a few of the high-tech options available. We also use collagen-based dressings and moisture-balancing dressings to ensure the best healing conditions for each wound.

Other treatments include advanced skin substitutes, compression therapy and casting for diabetic foot ulcers. Noninvasive vascular testing and chronic swelling management are key components of our care. We provide pressure relief and offloading techniques to further support healing and recommend devices like special shoes, wound vacs and sponges for home use.

We also offer diabetic education, nutritional counseling and patient and caregiver wound management/prevention counseling. These comprehensive services ensure that every aspect of wound care is addressed to promote faster and more effective healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) enhances the blood supply with oxygen at greater-than-normal atmospheric pressure. This oxygen improves white blood cell function and encourages the development of new capillaries, accelerating the healing process.

How long does HBO treatment take?

Treatment duration depends on your diagnosis. Most treatments take approximately 120 minutes.

What are chronic wounds?

Chronic wounds are those that fail to improve significantly or heal within four weeks. They require specialized care to address underlying issues and promote healing.

How can patients with diabetes prevent foot ulcers?

Patients with diabetes can prevent foot ulcers by quitting smoking, controlling blood sugar levels, and practicing daily foot hygiene. Proper footwear is essential to avoid trauma, so do not walk barefoot and inspect shoes for small objects. Avoid crossing your legs and wearing loose socks and stockings to reduce blood vessel pressure. If a problem develops, seek professional care promptly.
