Preparing for Your Surgery at St. Joseph's/Candler

Pre-Registration

You will receive a phone call from one of our staff members to process your pre-registration information and to verify insurance. This is a different service outside of the pre-anesthesia testing and education.

Pre-Anesthesia Testing and Education

This service is provided to ensure that you have a smooth surgical experience. Your physician may arrange a visit to our pre-admission testing center or, for your convenience. this service can be provided over the phone. To provide you with the appropriate care in the most efficient manner, when you arrive the following services are provided:

  • Review of your medical history and medications
  • Diagnostic and laboratory tests as needed
  • Education regarding the surgical procedure and measures you can take to ensure an optimal recovery

Arrival Time

You will be advised of your arrival time prior to surgery. Your doctor may give you an arrival time or you may receive a call the evening before your surgery from one of our staff nurses, who will let you know what time to arrive for your surgery. All surgical times are subject to change.

If you will not be at home the night before your surgery – or on Friday night for patients scheduled for Monday surgery, please call the day before your surgery to confirm your arrival time:

  • St. Joseph's at (912) 819-2100 between 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
  • Candler at (912) 819-8100 between 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Instructions for Adult Patients

  • Do not eat or drink anything (including water, chewing gum,and hard candy) after midnight the night before surgery. Please refrain from using any tobacco products within 24 hours of surgery.
  • Leave all jewelry, including rings, metal hairpins and all body piercing items at home.
  • If you wear contacts or glasses please bring your own appropriate case.
  • The number of adult visitors is limited to two. Please do not bring children with you on the day of surgery because the wait can be very difficult for them.
  • If you have a living will or durable power of attorney, please bring copies.
  • An adult family member or friend must accompany you and drive you home.
  • Bring (or wear) loose, comfortable clothing that will easily fit over a large bandage.
  • For questions or concerns, call Candler at (912) 819-6757 or (912) 819-8100, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. or St. Joseph's at (912) 819-2100, 6 a.m.- 6 p.m.
  • Bring your medication(s) in the original bottles to the hospital.
  • If you are staying overnight, bring a robe, slippers, deodorant and a toothbrush.
  • Ifyou are on a breathing support system such as a CPAP machine, please bring it with you along with all the attachments and the cord.
  • Fllow all preoperative instructions given to you by your physician/doctor.
  • On the day of discharge you will receive written instructions for home care.
  • Lactating mothers cannot breast feed for 24-hours after receiving anesthesia. If you are spending the night in the hospital please bring your breast pump. Please obtain detailed instructions from your surgeon or anesthesiologist prior to surgery.

Instructions for Pediatric Patients

  • Children may bring a comfort item to surgery (stuffed animal, blanket or pacifier).
  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany the child having surgery.
  • A responsible adult must be available at all times.
  • For safety purposes, it is recommended that two adults accompany the pediatric patient for the drive home.
  • Follow all preoperative instructions given to you by your physician/doctor.
  • On the day of discharge you will receive written instructions for home care.
  • Unless otherwise instructed please refrain from breast feeding four hours before surgery and using formula six hours before surgery.

Smoking

St. Joseph's/Candler is a smoke-free facility. If you smoke, please make arrangements with your surgeon for a nicotine patch prior to admission.
