Pulmonary Rehabilitation for COPD and Other Chronic Breathing Issues

Experts within The Heart Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation team are able to assist patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other chronic breathing conditions. These specialized programs can also assist patients as they recover from lung surgery.

Pulmonary disease is the third leading cause of death in the United States; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects nearly two million Americans. Changes in diet, exercise and smoking habits can decrease the impact of these diseases, and preventive and rehabilitative care for patients with pulmonary disease reduces the need for hospitalization.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Offers Structured Treatment Plans

Structured treatment plans improve functional status as factors causing disease are modified. As a result, pulmonary rehabilitation may prolong life, reduce disability and raise the level of physical and social functioning to the highest possible level. This comprehensive treatment plan, individualized for each patient, includes:

  • Assessment
  • Patient education
  • Patient training
  • Exercise
  • Psychosocial intervention
  • Follow up

How to Enroll

A physician's referral is necessary for admission into the program. The patient's referring physician remains the primary physician during rehabilitation and is kept informed.
