Aerobic Capacity (V02MAX) Assessment

A maximal graded exercise test (GXT) of endurance assesses aerobic capacity and is performed on a treadmill. Indirect calorimetry is used to measure maximal oxygen consumption (V02max) and carbon dioxide production during exercise to exhaustion. The V02max test requires the participant to exercise to exhaustion. For safety reasons, graded exercise tests (maximal and submaximal) will not be performed on persons with suspected or known cardiovascular, pulmonary or metabolic disease, or who experience signs and symptoms characteristic of such disease.

Cost: $75

Duration: 60 minutes

Resting Metabolic Rate Assessment

The resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the amount of energy (calories) a body burns while at rest, which accounts for approximately 70 percent of the body's daily energy expenditure. This is the amount of energy needed to perform vital body functions such as respiration and circulation. Using gas analysis, we can measure an individual's RMR, which can be used to inform decisions regarding diet and exercise plans.

Preparation/Procedure:

Avoid eating and exercising for six to eight hours prior to testing. If possible, avoid the use of stimulants, such as caffeine, on the day of the test. Consult with a physician before skipping a dose of any prescribed stimulant. Over-the-counter antihistamines, caffeine and some herbal remedies should be avoided.

Cost: $75 for first testing

Duration: 60 minutes

Cost: $50 for follow-up tests

Duration: 30 minutes

Performance

A test for anyone interested in determining his or her level of cardiorespiratory fitness. The test is similar to a treadmill stress test, but designed for individuals with no prior history of cardiovascular disease. The test will determine an individual’s Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2), which is the gold standard for measuring cardiorespiratory or aerobic fitness. Once this value is determined, a proper individualized training zone and aerobic exercise will be prescribed. The development of an Exercise Prescription and 1 hour personal training to get started also included.

The assessment includes:

  • Measured Resting Metabolic Rate
  • Maximal Oxygen Consumption (VO2max) measured via metabolic cart
  • Body composition analysis (% body fat, fat mass, fat free mass)
