Building a better sandwich

Our friends at Waters Café believe a great sandwich is simple — but never accidental. It’s balance, texture, temperature, and a little bit of surprise. And the results can be both tasty and healthy, with plenty of protein, vitamin B12 and other nutrients (especially when you add veggies) and without a need for excessive salt.
Whether you’re building lunch at home or ordering at the counter, here are six ways to take your sandwich from good to unforgettable:
- Start with Structure
Your bread is your foundation. Choose something sturdy enough to hold fillings without overpowering them. Lightly toast for contrast — even a soft loaf benefits from a little edge. - Season Every Layer
Don’t rely on one ingredient to do all the work. A pinch of salt on tomatoes. A crack of pepper on greens. A swipe of vinaigrette on the bread. Flavor builds in layers. - Balance Fat & Acid
Rich meats and cheeses love something bright. Add pickled onions, a squeeze of lemon, peppery arugula, or a sharp mustard to keep things lively. - Think Texture
Creamy + crunchy = magic. Pair roasted vegetables with crisp lettuce. Add toasted nuts or seeds. Even a thin layer of slaw can wake everything up. - Mind the Moisture
Spread condiments edge to edge to create a barrier. Keep juicy ingredients toward the center. Nobody wants a soggy bottom bun. - Finish with Heat (or Chill)
Warm bread with cool fillings creates contrast. Or press it briefly for a golden exterior and melty interior. Temperature is an ingredient — use it intentionally.
