Why Choose St. Joseph's/Candler

Why you should do your internal medicine residency at St. Joseph's/Candler

St. Joseph's/Candler is the region's only faith-based, not-for-profit health system, and while one of the most historic in the country, it is also the most advanced in the region and growing to match the population.

Our four facilities, including Candler Hospital (founded 1804), St. Joseph's Hospital (founded 1875), Mary Telfair Women's Hospital (founded 1886), and the Georgia Infirmary (founded 1832), represent nearly 700 cumulative years of dedicated service to the Savannah community and the people of Southeast Georgia. That legacy is not just history. It is the foundation of everything we do. Guided by our mission to treat illness and promote wellness for all people, rooted in God's love, St. Joseph's/Candler has built a culture of compassion, integrity, and accountability that shapes the environment in which you will train.

When you choose St. Joseph's/Candler, you are joining a health system that has always put people first.

Training at St. Joseph's/Candler means training at the forefront of medicine. We are a tertiary referral system and we care for some of the sickest patients from all over southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Our two anchor hospitals offer 714 beds and are accredited by The Joint Commission.

A GLANCE AT A GROWING SYSTEM:

  • 2025 Hospital admissions: 23,227
  • 2025 Emergency Department visits: 97,639
  • 2025 Outpatient visits: 371,846
  • 2025 Primary Care visits: 125,440
  • 2025 Observation patients: 5,283
  • 2025 Baby deliveries: 2,956
  • 2025 Inpatient and outpatient surgeries: 22,112

Across the system, residents will have access to some of the most advanced medical technologies available in the region, including the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System®,, CyberKnife®, TrueBeam®,, Monarch Robotic Bronchoscopy, 3T MRI, 3D mammography, and computer-assisted ultrasound. This is "smart medicine" in practice: cutting-edge technology in the hands of physicians who know how to use it, in service of patients who need it.

Residents train within a health system built around specialized excellence. St. Joseph's/Candler's Centers of Excellence include the Nancy N. and J. C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion, The Heart Hospital, the Institute for Advanced Bone and Joint Surgery, the Institute for Neurosciences, and Mary Telfair Women's Hospital, each offering the most advanced care in its specialty across the region.

Working alongside these specialists provides residents with clinical exposure and mentorship that goes far beyond a standard training environment. Complementing that physician expertise is a Magnet-recognized nursing staff, holders of one of the most prestigious designations in nursing excellence, earned by St. Joseph's/Candler six times. The nurses who will work alongside our residents are among the best trained and most dedicated in the Southeast.

The breadth of St. Joseph's/Candler's reach means residents encounter a patient population as varied and complex as the region itself. The health system serves 33 counties across Southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry, with a comprehensive network of primary care and specialty practices extending well beyond the two anchor hospitals.

Outpatient locations in Pooler, Bryan County, Bluffton, Liberty County, Wayne County, and Bulloch County bring healthcare closer to underserved communities and give residents a meaningful window into the full spectrum of regional healthcare needs. That diversity of patient experience, across both inpatient and outpatient settings, is one of the most valuable aspects of training at St. Joseph's/Candler.

When residency ends, St. Joseph's/Candler wants you to stay. The St. Joseph's/Candler Physician Network offers a wide range of job opportunities across primary care and specialty practices throughout the region, giving residents a direct pathway from training to practice without ever leaving the community. Georgia faces a well-documented physician shortage, and every resident who completes their training here and joins the network becomes part of the solution.

Whether you plan to build a long-term career in Southeast Georgia or are still exploring your options, you will graduate from this program with the skills, credentials, and connections to practice anywhere. Many choose to stay, and with opportunities like these, it is easy to see why.
