Protect yourself from skin cancer with help from the LCRP
Living in Savannah and the Lowcountry means abundant sunshine, but it also places us in the heart of the "skin cancer belt," where rates of skin cancer, including melanoma, are higher than average. In Georgia alone, melanoma cases are 13 percent higher than the national average, and this dangerous form of skin cancer accounts for 75 percent of all skin cancer-related deaths.
Skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer when the right steps are taken. By being aware of the risks and prioritizing your skin health, you can reduce your chances of developing serious conditions like melanoma. Understanding the risks and taking preventive measures is essential for protecting yourself and your loved ones from skin cancer.
Act against skin cancer
The fight against skin cancer starts with education and proactive measures. Here are some practical steps you can take:
- Avoid sunburns: Research shows that experiencing five major sunburns over your lifetime increases your risk of melanoma by 50 percent. Protect your skin with shade, clothing, and sunscreen.
- Skip tanning beds: UV rays from tanning beds significantly increase your risk of skin cancer. If you desire a sun-kissed look, choose safer alternatives like self-tanning lotions.
- Use sunscreen effectively: Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of at least 15. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
- Monitor your moles: Changes in moles can signal early signs of melanoma. Examine your skin regularly and track any size, shape or color changes.
Each step you take toward protecting your skin reduces your risk of developing melanoma and other skin cancers. Simple actions like reapplying sunscreen regularly or avoiding midday sun can make a significant difference. Remember, prevention is an everyday commitment to your health.
