Comprehensive cancer diagnostics and imaging technology
The Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion at St. Joseph's/Candler, offers state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic technology, enabling physicians to detect cancer in its earliest stages for effective treatment when cancer cells are most responsive. Early detection is critical to improving outcomes, and our technology ensures we stay at the forefront of cancer care.
From diagnosis to treatment, our team combines expertise with compassion to guide you every step of the way. We are proud to offer some of the most advanced technology available to help you heal, live well, and focus on what matters most—your health and quality of life.
Revolutionary imaging technology for early detection
Recent imaging advanced allow us to detect smaller and more difficult-to-find cancers in their earliest stages. Our imaging systems do more than identify cancer—they empower our physicians to create personalized treatment plans that improve outcomes and minimize side effects. By integrating the latest diagnostic advancements, we provide comprehensive care designed for your unique needs.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Spectroscopy (MRS)
MRI is a powerful diagnostic tool that uses a magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images of soft tissues, including muscles, joints, and ligaments. At Candler Hospital, we lead the region in MRI technology and are one of the few sites offering breast MRI and vacuum-assisted breast biopsy. These specialized services enhance the accuracy of cancer detection and reduce the need for invasive procedures.
With our accredited MRI department, patients can trust they are receiving care that meets the highest standards. Our imaging team works closely with oncologists to ensure each scan provides the critical information needed for early detection and treatment. We also prioritize patient comfort with a streamlined and efficient imaging process.
Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS): Enhanced cellular diagnostics
MRS complements MRI by analyzing the chemical structure of cells to diagnose and monitor conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s Disease. By identifying metabolic changes in cells, MRS provides invaluable data for understanding diseases over time. This tool is especially useful for tracking the progression of cancer and assessing the effectiveness of treatment plans.
When combined with other diagnostic imaging tools, MRS offers a more comprehensive understanding of a patient’s condition. This holistic approach reduces the need for invasive procedures while enhancing diagnostic accuracy. For our patients, this means more precise treatments, shorter recovery times, and better long-term outcomes.

PET-CT scans: Precision meets comfort in Savannah and Bluffton
Our state-of-the-art PET-CT scanners offer faster imaging and reduced radiation exposure, making it one of the most advanced tools in cancer diagnostics. This technology is a game-changer for detecting cancer, evaluating heart muscle activity and evaluating seizure conditions. By injecting a sugar-like radioactive substance, the scan highlights areas of high metabolic activity where cancer cells are often found.
The large open scanning zone is designed to reduce anxiety and claustrophobia, ensuring patients feel safe during their scan. Physicians benefit from sharper, highly detailed images, enabling them to deliver faster and more accurate diagnoses. The quicker imaging process also means you can spend less time in the scanner and more time focusing on your health and healing. Our convenient locations and dedicated staff make it easy for you to access the care you need when you need it most.

Ultrasound imaging: Non-invasive and painless
Ultrasound is a safe, less intrusive procedure that uses sound waves to create high-resolution images of abdominal structures, veins, arteries and extremities. At the LCRP, our ultrasound imaging provides accurate results without exposing patients to ionizing radiation. It is a preferred diagnostic tool for evaluating a wide range of conditions in a painless and efficient manner.
Our ICVAL vascular accreditation underscores our commitment to providing high-quality imaging services. The versatility of an ultrasound makes it an invaluable resource for oncologists, enabling them to gather precise information to guide treatment decisions. Patients can also feel reassured knowing the procedure is quick, minimal in impact, and entirely free from discomfort. With ultrasound technology, we take another step toward providing patient-centered care that prioritizes safety, accuracy and peace of mind.
