Medication Counseling

Expert medication counseling for improved patient outcomes

Oncology pharmacists are experts in medication management. These specialists provide guidance on managing pain and other symptoms and adjusting medications to meet individual needs. Their expertise ensures your treatment plan is as safe and effective as possible.

Ensuring your care team is aware of your current medications and supplements is vital to effective cancer treatment. Certain medications can interfere with chemotherapy, which is why participating in a medication counseling session with your provider is necessary. These sessions not only improve the effectiveness of your therapy but also help reduce potential negative reactions.

With a committed team that understands the complexities of cancer care, we are here to help you navigate every step of your treatment journey.

How to get the most out of your medication counseling

Medication counseling is an essential part of your care plan, helping you understand how to use your medications safely and effectively. To make the most of your appointments, always provide your care team with a detailed list of your medications, including prescription and non-prescription drugs (including vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements), dosages, how often you take them and the reasons for use. Alternatively, you can bring your medications in their original containers to your visit to avoid confusion.

Here are key questions to ask about your medications to ensure you fully understand their use and potential effects:

  • What are the brand and generic names of the medication?
  • What is the purpose of this medication?
  • What is the correct dosage, and how should I take it? (e.g., with food?)
  • How often should I take it, and what should I do if I miss a dose?
  • Are any tests required while taking this medication?
  • Does this medication have any side effects? What are they, and what should I do if they occur?
  • Can this medication interact with other prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, or foods?
  • How should I store this medication properly?
  • Do I need to be careful when handling the medication or do I need to inform my caretaker of any special handling precautions?
  • If I or my partner are of child bearing age, are there any special considerations while I am on the medication?
  • If this is a new prescription, should I stop taking any other medications I’m currently using?
  • Where should I expect to receive my mediation from? (e.g. infusion room, specialty pharmacy or local pharmacy?)

Understanding these details is critical to ensuring your medications work as they should and do not cause unnecessary complications. Always feel free to ask your healthcare team if you have additional questions or concerns.
